Spotlight: Upper Iowa University PDF Print E-mail

Once again, Upper Iowa University has graciously offered to host the Iowa PBL Fall Leadership Conference at the Fayette campus on October 24 and 25, 2009.  The UIU PBL Crew—Chapter Advisor and State Committee member, Lynn Isvik; UIU officer team members Monte Graff, Shannon Stone, Mary Ohloff, Sam Hansel, and Breina Burgin; and all the rest of the UIU members—are excited to share their campus with all Iowa PBL members.  They look forward to a promising year.  “We hope you enjoy your weekend on campus as much as we do” was a resounding and proud voice heard from chapter members.

In keeping with the conference theme, the “tailgating” registration kick off is just the start of a fun themed weekend not soon to be forgotten.  Last year’s social was a big hit with members.  We left a great impression on our friends at Lilac Lanes and Ron has invited us back for another round of fun at the West Union bowling alley.  We appreciate Ron’s support and look forward to another evening of camaraderie and competition.  While you are at the conference, be sure to thank Ron and the UIU members for all their hard work in helping prepare and plan another great conference!

The photograph to the left shows the entrance to Andres Center for Business and Education where the majority of the conference meetings and workshops will be held.  Here are a few facts from Upper Iowa University president, Dr. Alan G. Walker:

Upper Iowa University fall enrollment reached a near record high on the Fayette campus at 903 students, an 11% increase over 2008 and a 40% increase in the last four years.

These are impressive numbers that we haven’t seen here in Fayette since the late sixties and early seventies, when incoming students were motivated by a war-time draft,” stated Dr. Walker.  “Today, students are choosing Upper Iowa University for all the right reasons—our strong academic reputation, popular degree programs, unique class scheduling, robust financial aid and scholarships, and the only Division II athletics program in the state.

This summer, UIU embarked on a $75-million capital improvement campaign to its Fayette campus, breaking ground on a new state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly Liberal Arts building, student union, and suite-style housing.  These buildings are slated to be ready by fall 2010.

The members of UIU PBL are a very active group.  This summer, the Iowa PBL State Officers desired to gather members across the state for a community service project.  State Historian and UIU member, Shannon Stone, helped organize a community service project on August 1 with the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity.  Her chapter members then joined the state officers in assisting with building eleven homes for local residents in Cedar Rapids.  They also worked at the dairy booth for the Winneshiek City Fair, and built a PBL float for the Watermelon Days Parade

Last year, members did an excellent job seeking contributions and donations for the wonderful prizes at the fall conference.  We look forward to seeing what they have in store for this year!  Upper Iowa PBL is Simply the Best!

Note:  The Spotlight feature will be a monthly feature on the Web site, highlighting an outstanding chapter, member, or advisor.  If you would like to submit an article for this feature, showcasing outstanding work or service, please contact State Secretary Joni Rentschler ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
