Dakota State University Rocks Out for Prematurity Awareness Month

Dakota State University’s Phi Beta Lambda hosted a week-long prematurity awareness campaign for the March of Dimes Tuesday, November 13th to Friday, November 16th. The week was kicked off at the DSU Men and Women’s doubleheader basketball game on Tuesday night. PBL invited a guest speaker from March of Dimes, Lisa Shatswell, to help promote Prematurity Awareness Month and to share her personal story during halftime. PBL members Megan Pifer, Jeni Habeger, Will Bakeberg, Andy Hunter, and Andrew Van Demark teamed up with Lisa, collecting donations for the March of Dimes throughout the night. Lisa and the PBL members held a 50/50 raffle and sold koozies to help raise money. PBL members Megan and Jeni introduced Lisa to an ecstatic DSU crowd during halftime of the men’s game. Lisa shared a very powerful, personal story of premature birth and how it had changed her life. Lisa sent a wonderful message to the audience and did a wonderful job in helping PBL raise awareness about premature birth and the March of Dimes organization.

Furthermore, PBL members raised awareness and collected donations for Prematurity Awareness Month in the Spectrum Lounge of the Trojan Center. PBL showed faculty and students various examples of how small the clothing and diapers are of premature babies to how much air premature babies can breathe. PBL also had handed out hundreds of March of Dimes stickers.

To reach students to even a greater extent, about a dozen PBL members marched through the four resident halls on campus Wednesday and Thursday nights to  collect donations from students. Marching through the resident halls was a significant success as over half of the total money raised throughout the week was in the resident halls!

All in all, PBL raised a total of $350.00 for the March of Dimes during the four day push to raise awareness for March of Dimes. This amazing accomplishment could not have been done without the support of DSU Faculty and students, Lisa Shatswell’s generous support, and of course the outstanding members of DSU-PBL! Thank you to everyone who helped and supported in this effort to raise awareness for premature birth for the March of Dimes organization!
